Volunteer as a Kindness Club Host

Are you interested in finding out about other cultures? Would you enjoy surprising people around you with random acts of kindness? Then volunteering as a "Host" with MOSAIC's Kindness Club program may be just what you're looking for!

As a Host, you will help an immigrant or refugee who has recently arrived in Canada to:

· meet new people,

· learn about Canadian culture and values,

· discover what to do for fun in Vancouver,

· find out about community services, and

· volunteer in the community.

There are so many potential benefits for you. Maybe you'll make a new friend or try a new activity. Maybe you'll start learning to speak another language or be inspired to travel overseas. The opportunities are endless.

If you join our team of volunteers, you'll be partnered with a newcomer for 3 months. Partners usually meet once a week for two hours. What you do together and when you meet is up to you. We also encourage partners to attend one social gathering per month at our office on Commercial Drive to share stories and have fun with other hosts and newcomers.

If that's not enough, you'll get to think of three acts of kindness to do together in your communities. You could mow an elderly neighbor's lawn, donate blood or clean graffiti from neighborhood walls. The choices are as vast as your imagination. Why the focus on acts of kindness? Because we find that volunteering is a great way for newcomers to get to know their new community, give something back and bring smiles to people's faces.

This is a wonderful program that really makes a difference in newcomers' lives. We're keen to hear from you if you're a helpful, non-judgmental, reliable person who:

· has been in Canada for at least 5 years and is familiar with Canadian life,

· is interested in cross-cultural exchange,

· wants to be a mentor in your community, and

· is at least 19 years of age.

MOSAIC has been providing settlement services in the Vancouver community for over 30 years. We provide free training for all new hosts on understanding settlement needs, building relationships with new immigrants and communicating effectively with people who have limited English.

E-mail Elaine Qin at volunteerassistant@mosaicbc.com for an application package. We look forward to hearing from you …

Side note: My sister has done this and loved it!
